Exploring California’s Gold Country

THERE’S GOLD IN THEM THAR HILLS! I’m referring, of course, to the hills along California’s historic highway 49 often referred to as Gold Rush Country. I’ve always been fascinated by the history of the miners and their quests for gold. So I decided it was high time that I take a road trip through the eastern California countryside to explore the old historic gold towns that were left behind. On this adventure I planned to visit mines, learn some history and even trying my hand at panning for gold. Maybe I’d get really lucky and find gold just like the early prospectors had! You might say I was already coming down with a touch of “gold fever”.

What a country! People used to say this about the good ol’ USA but I’m referring to our friendly neighbors to the north, Canada. Last year I spent a week exploring the western part of Canada and this year I wanted to visit Eastern Canada. The two sides of Canada are equally beautiful, but the eastern side of Canada is unique in that it seems far more “European” than than its western half. The cities are intriguing and the countryside is simply beautiful. For this trip we’d be visiting the four eastern cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City, and Montreal. Wow, what a view! Chicago’s skyline is one like no other. From up here on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Tower you can get unbelievable 360 degree birds eye views of the breathtaking metropolis below. There are so many architectural masterpieces everywhere you look. Do you see the tall black building on the right hand side in the image above? That is the Sears Tower (renamed the Willis Tower) that once held the record for being the tallest building in the world. Two Countries, One Island: Exploring St. Maarten

Are you ready to walk along the white sandy beaches of a Caribbean island? Then let me introduce you to the island of St. Maarten. But first, let’s get one thing straight. This island has not one but TWO names and there is a very good reason for that. This tiny island is divided between two countries, France to the north and the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the south. On the French side, the island is called Saint Martin and on the Dutch side, it is called Sint Maarten. For simplicity’s sake, I’m going to refer to it as St. Maarten. Each side has it’s own unique feel but together they make one incredible island. From the casinos, shopping, and nightlife on the Dutch side to the French Caribbean cuisine and nude beaches on the French side, this island has a lot to offer.
